The signs of aging can be caused by many things. Some of the top reasons are listed below.

Being on a good healthy diet goes a long way to slow down the aging process. You need to limit your calorie intake.
Your Doctor or Physician will be able to tell you what your proper intake should be for your particular age and health. As part of your diet you should ensure that it is balanced and consists of the following.

Fresh fruits including berries.
Vegetables, contain antioxidants.
Beans.
Seafood.
Cereals.
Cut down on fast foods.

FITNESS
Your fitness level will also determine how the natural aging process affects you.
Make sure that you include some of the following in your
weekly schedule.

Exercise.
Fitness training.
Stretching the body.
Yoga.

I Hate Diets Approach to Weight Loss

The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 1999-2002 survey) determined that approximately 65% of the U.S. adult population was either obese or overweight. This survey also indicated that an estimated 16% of children between the ages of 6 and 19 years are overweight. And, there is no doubt that obesity is on the rise in our country!


Why the upwards trend in obesity? As most of us are aware, Americans have fallen prey to high-fat, high-sugar, high-calorie diets (common in fast food restaurants). We’re typically eating way-y-y more calories each day than we need for our lifestyles! (But, oh! Those ‘comfort’ foods sure taste good and temporarily soothe our psyches, don’t they?!)

Let’s face it, though! If we constantly consume more calories than we burn, most likely we’ll eventually put on some extra weight!


Ironically, Americans often go through spurts of trying one fad diet after another or starting an exercise regimen, only to get bored with it and quit after only a few weeks or so. We refer to a ‘fitness craze.’ Do we call it a ‘craze’ because we get so hyped up about it one minute, pour all our efforts into losing weight and getting into shape…yet, soon, throw our hands up in the air in defeat?


The U.S. has become a sedentary society…and, that’s a big contributor to the weight problems many of us have. When you combine the common American diet with sitting around endlessly on our derrieres, it’s no wonder that obesity is on the rise!


Unfortunately, Americans want a quick fix for everything that seems to be wrong in our lives. Being overweight is no exception. We want to find some miracle diet or supplement that will make those extra pounds magically fall off overnight! But, face it! That is NOT going to happen—at least, not anytime soon! So, for now, we must accept our own responsibility for doing what it takes to lose weight and get in shape!


Fad diets may help you initially drop some pounds in a short period of time. However, most of that is just water weight and is usually gained back (and, then some) just as quickly! If you’re serious about losing FAT and keeping it off, then you need to make some serious lifestyle changes!


I recommend a common sense approach to weight loss:


# Consult with your healthcare professional before beginning any exercise or weight loss program
# Set realistic goals
# Develop a healthy plan to help you achieve your goals (i.e. focus on eating a balanced, healthy diet and getting some sort of regular exercise)
# Get started and stick with it!


Note: if you fall behind on your workouts or blow your diet occasionally, do NOT get disheartened! Merely refocus and start over again the next day!


What should you eat? What kind of workouts should you do?


First of all, I encourage you to plan your diet based on the USDA’s Food Pyramid. The human body needs foods from every food group! I DO, however, suggest that you keep your intake of processed foods, simple carbohydrates, and saturated fats to a minimum.


Simple carbohydrates include sucrose, lactose, maltose, glucose, and fructose sugars. These are nutritionally lacking and full of ‘empty calories.’ If you wish to avoid carbohydrates, these are the carbohydrates to stay away from!


DO eat plenty of complex carbohydrates—those carbs found in fruits, vegetables, whole-grain breads, and cereals. These are good carbohydrates, and they provide nutrients that are essential for good health. Complex carbohydrates have been associated with a low incidence of lung, colon, esophagus, and stomach cancer. They may also decrease your risk of heart disease, diabetes mellitus, diverticulosis, hypertension, and gallstones.


Despite what you may have heard about including fat in your diet, we actually NEED certain fats to keep our bodies functioning properly. Just remember that it is the saturated fats—fats that come primarily from animals (red meats, eggs, and dairy products), as well as from certain plants (such as coconut and palm oils)—that should be eaten in moderation.


Eating excessive amounts of saturated fats over a period of time has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and cancer of the breast, prostate, and colon.


On the other hand, unsaturated fats are thought to be less likely associated with cardiovascular disease, cancer, and obesity. Unsaturated fats include monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats. Monounsaturated fats are primarily vegetable derivatives. Included among these fats are peanut oil, canola oil, and olive oil. Polyunsaturated fats include some fats from vegetable sources, as well as fats derived from fish. Among polyunsaturated fats are safflower and corn oils. These provide Omega-6 fats. We get Omega-3 fats from fish sources.


Some fat in your diet is necessary for optimal health. Unsaturated fats are believed to protect the body against certain types of cancer, as well as heart disease. These fats may also aid in memory function, protect against other diseases, and help keep the metabolism functioning properly.


The point I’d like to stress is that you should never completely eliminate any food group from your diet! To do so could have dire consequences, such as the development of anemia or osteoporosis. Include foods in your daily diet from each food group, but keep an eye on those portion sizes! To lose weight, you need to cut back on calories.


In addition to eating properly, a regular exercise program can greatly help you shed those extra pounds and is essential to good overall fitness. Exercise improves your metabolism and increases the number of calories your body burns each day, which is necessary for weight loss. And, regular exercise improves your cardiovascular fitness, your flexibility, your endurance, and your balance.


The type of exercise you do is up to you. If you get the ‘go ahead’ from your doctor or nurse practitioner, you should begin slowly and work up to a minimum of 20-minute cardiovascular workouts, three times per week. Strength training and flexibility exercises are important, too. Try out different exercises to find those you enjoy the most. If you enjoy what you’re doing, you’ll more likely continue doing it on a regular basis.

Healthy Weight Loss

3. You will build muscle that will make you look taller, leaner and healthier.
4. You will build muscles that will burn more calories than fat.

Your very first step should be to talk to your doctor about your health and your goals. It might save your life. Your next step should be to find a partner who will help you be more responsible to show up for a work out and to complete the work out. A work out partner should also make the work out more enjoyable. If you are not able to find a partner and do not feel you have the discipline to work out regularly, you may want to start your exercise program by paying a person personal coach for training and discipline. Most people need 21 days to make working out a habit, so hire them for at least the first 21 days. Check with your local YMCA or other gym for partners and coaches.


However, if you cannot afford to join a gym, don’t let that slow you down. You can still walk or run outside, or workout inside using video tapes or walk on a treadmill. If you don’t have money for work out tapes, you can rent them from the library. The bottom line is if you want to work out, you will find a way.
Finally, once you have your workout schedule working for you, offer to help someone else become disciplined to work out.

Helping others always helps you feel better as well. Give it a try!

2. Increasing your metabolism.

Plain and simple, exercising will increase your metabolism and will help you lose weight at all hours of the day, even at night when you are sleeping! Your metabolism is the amount of calories you burn during the day. Conversely, your body also has a built in system for self-survival in case of famine. If you don’t eat enough food, you can also reduce your metabolism and make it harder to lose weight. We will talk more about that in just a moment.

3. Changing your eating habits.

You’re doing better now, but working out and increasing your metabolism is only a part of the solution. You still must change your eating habits. Have you found yourself doing this crazy? Are you eating a Granola bar for breakfast, a salad for lunch and then eating chocolate shakes and hamburgers from the drive through late at night on the way home from the gym? That won’t work! You are starving yourself and lowering your metabolism in the long run, and eating food late at night that will not get burned off and only makes you feel more miserable the next day when you look in the mirror or step on the scale.


Do you know that you are setting up yourself for failure? Your body is smart… so smart that it knows if you are not giving it enough food, that there may be a problem, and you start to burn fewer calories. That will not help you look or feel better in the long run, so don’t try it in the short run.

4. Changing your lifestyle and your mindset.

The final way to change your body and the way you look and feel is to become more active. Walk the stairs to your office instead of taking the elevator. Park your car way from the rest of the cars at the mall so you walk a few extra steps. Go for a walk when you get home from school or work instead of turning on the TV or the computer. Ask your friends to join you for a game of horse in basketball. If that is not an option, take your basketball to a local park, be brave and ask someone to play a game of one on one there. They might have been feeling just like you and will be thankful to have the opportunity to exercise and perhaps make a new friend.


It’s all about changing your attitude one-step and one day at a time. Just remember you did not gain the weight in one day and you cannot take it off in one day. It is a series of steps that will lead to success. Another analogy is that it would be nice to make one large jump over a mountain, but in reality it takes many steps to get over the mountain, and it is possible. Most importantly, you just have to take that first step, starting right now, by reading this article again and then deciding to “Just do it!”

If you're fit and limber enough, you might enjoy the intensity and fast pacing of Ashtanga yoga. Unlike most forms, this type requires almost constant movements, with practitioners 'flowing' from one pose to the next. Poses are performed in a set series and in the same order every time.

Kundalini
Kundalini yoga is a discipline that emphasizes the 'serpent power' that is located at the base of the spine and lies dormant until the practitioner elevates it up the body to achieve liberation. This serpent power is a form of energy and Kundalini exercises help free this energy through synchronized breathing and physical exercise. Kundalini yoga involves fast and repetitive movements and chanting may be used.

Iyengar
This style of yoga emphasizes alignment of the body and is a good choice for people who want to improve their balance and overall posture. Poses in Iyengar yoga are held over long periods and may require straps and blocks to achieve maximum body alignment.

Jivamukti
Founded by David Life and Sharon Gannon, Jivamukti is inspired by Astanga yoga and involves physical exercises interspersed with meditation, chanting and spiritual instructions. If you want yoga that involves not only your body and spirit but also your mind, this is a good style to practice.

If you want more challenge and are quite fit to perform, try Sivananda. Founded in1957 by a disciple of Swami Sivananda, this type of yoga focuses on 12 poses, proper breathing, relaxation, a vegetarian diet and meditation. This is more intensive and not for the those looking for a temporary fix since this discipline will require some form of lifestyle change.
